Endorsement from Jackie Stevenson

I'm writing in support of Vanessa Blomgren for Secretary of the State DFL Party.

Vanessa is a tireless leader dedicated to strengthening the DFL. She is someone who is an example for other young women who rarely see women their age assume leadership positions within the Party. We need to support young women who want to become leaders in our State Party.

Vanessa is also a dedicated activist and experienced Secretary. She never sought out positions to accumulate titles, she is a hardworking volunteer who seeks out opportunities to do jobs she is good at.

Her service as Secretary of her Senate District, MYDFL, and her Congressional District prove her passion and ability to do the job of Secretary.  Over 8 years of taking detailed minutes and being an asset to multiple organizations, makes Vanessa the most qualified person for the job.

I know Vanessa will be a big part of the DFL for many years to come.  Please join me in supporting this experienced young woman in her candidacy for Secretary of the State Party at the February 5th Business Conference.

Endorsement from Senator Ron Latz

I am pleased to recommend Vanessa Blomgren for Secretary of the State DFL Party.  Since my grandfather Rubin Latz’s years as a labor leader in the 1930s and ‘40s, partnering with Hubert Humphrey and others to found the DFL, and my father Bob Latz’s service including as the DFL-endorsed candidate for Attorney General in 1966, my family has taken a great interest in the success of the Minnesota DFL Party.  Success has required dedication, hard work, and skill.  Vanessa Blomgren has all three.

Since volunteering herself to be elected to serve as Senate District 44 Secretary in 2008, Vanessa has taken on numerous responsibilities for our grassroots party organization.  She worked local parades, fairs and festivals.  She attended meet-ups around the district and helped plan the district’s annual picnic.  She doorknocked heavily for our candidates.  She took on responsibility as secretary of MYDFL and CD5.

Vanessa’s talent and hard work were recognized in her selection to coordinate State Representative Steve Simon’s re-election campaign, and she collaborated well with the managers for Rep. Ryan Winkler’s and my re-election campaigns.  From recruiting and sharing volunteers, attending house parties, and doorknocking, to working to keep the coordinated campaign office humming for all GOTV efforts with volunteers, data entry and more targeted doorknocking, Vanessa displayed the skill and acumen valuable to winning campaign efforts.

Vanessa would bring the same talent to our state party.  I hope you will join me in supporting adding her as a valuable asset to our party leadership and our efforts to win back the legislature in 2012.

Endorsement from Congressman Keith Ellison

I’m writing to announce my support of Vanessa Blomgren in her bid for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Secretary.

For years, Vanessa has dedicated herself to helping elect Democrats at every level of government. She has played an active role in the DFL, acting as Secretary for Senate District 44, the Fifth Congressional District, and MYDFL. In addition, Vanessa has volunteered for numerous DFL campaigns, served as a precinct chair, and managed Rep. Steve Simon's 2010 campaign.

Vanessa is committed to building a stronger party so that we can re-elect President Obama, Senator Klobuchar, and take back the Minnesota House and Senate in 2012. She will work hard to build relationships with voters across the state and get more people involved in the political process.

I urge you to support Vanessa Blomgren for DFL Party Secretary. She is an emerging leader who is committed to strengthening our party and increasing political participation. I am confident that she will work tirelessly to help advance our shared progressive values.

Sincerely,

Keith Ellison
Member of Congress, Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District

Rep. Steve Simon - Letter of Support

I'm writing in enthusiastic support of Vanessa Blomgren for DFL Party Secretary.

Vanessa is a talented and effective DFL leader.  She served as my campaign manager, so I had the opportunity to work closely with her for several months.  She knows how to win elections for Democrats.  She is bold, strategic, disciplined, organized, hard-working, and attentive to detail.  She is relentless on behalf of Democrats and DFL principles.  She gets results.

Vanessa is politically savvy.  She understands that Democrats have to be proactive and creative in order to grow our party, elect our candidates, and advance DFL priorities.  She knows that we have to reach out to people all over Minnesota in order to make our DFL Party the best that it can be.  For Vanessa, that means a sensible blend of new technology and good old-fashioned people power.  She realizes that DFL success will come as a result of patience and perseverance.

Vanessa has the energy and the creativity to be a great DFL Party Secretary.  She is dynamic, personable, and thoughtful.  She'll travel anywhere and speak to anyone to help Democrats.  We can always count on her to be a true and dedicated DFL team player.

I'm very proud to support Vanessa Blomgren for DFL Party Secretary, and I respectfully ask that you support her candidacy.

Thanks a lot for your time and consideration (and for your service to the DFL Party).

Rep. Steve Simon
(DFL -- District 44A -- St. Louis Park/Hopkins)

Endorsement from Chippewa County Assoc. Chair

Today, another young DFLer gave his support to my campaign for Secretary of the DFL.  Thank you Mr. Josh Preston, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Read his words below or visit his Blog here: http://joshuapreston.wordpress.com/

According to an article in The Nation (John Nichols 11/16/10) voter turnout plummeted 60% last year from the 2008 high, and if this trend continues there is no chance for our party in 2012. There just isn’t. And while it may be tempting to wallow and mourn about “how things used to be” doing so exaggerates the past, weakens the present and surrenders our future. It’s unacceptable pseudo-progress and if we are to build a strong party (and with it a more progressive state) we must refuse, resist and reform the mentality that true change comes without hard work. The problem of voter turnout is one that has plagued the politically-minded for ages and is one that will not be solved overnight, but even so it is entirely within our capacity to be changed (if not greatly alleviated) if we are willing to devote the time, energy and resources to it.

After the “shellacking” our party received in the last election, the message is clear that sometimes good ideas are electoral politics are not enough to create the change we want to see. In addition to these two things we also need a strong grassroots and for that we need strong leaders who are not afraid to go above and beyond their constitutional obligations in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. In fact, we need people like Vanessa Blomgren.

Vanessa is currently running to be the Secretary of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, and is (I believe) the most qualified individual for the job. In the time that I have known Vanessa through Minnesota Young DFL, I have been amazed by the work she has done to help grow and improve the organization. Both engaging and dedicated to her work, I know that besides having the necessary secretarial experience, she will bring to our party incalculable benefits. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to read the announcement of her candidacy, which outlines her 7+ years of secretarial experience (a journey that has taken her from the college to the state level).

So as an Associate Chair (Chippewa County DFL), College Caucus Chair of the MYDFL and rural Minnesotan (Montevideo/Morris) tried and true, I know that Vanessa will make a great secretary for the party. Even if you have your reservations about Vanessa, I encourage you to talk to her yourself by visiting her campaign page here (and I encourage you to become a fan of it while you’re there) or her campaign blog here.

Support from Young DFL Women

One of my goals is to be an ambassador for young DFLers. I plan to travel around the state to college campuses and other young liberal groups and talk to them about how they can get involved in party politics. When I first graduated from college, I didn't know about Minnesota Young DFL and I had a hard time trying to break in to the system. I want to change that. I want young people to know about MYDFL, about how the party works, about what exactly they can do to get involved at their local levels.

Below are two letters of support from young DFLers I've worked with. Hannah helped with the campaign I managed in 2010; Krista was Co-Chair of the College Democrats when I was at St. Olaf.

My name is Hannah Borowsky, and I am a senior at Hopkins High School. Over the last few years, my friends and I have created a Young Liberals Club at our school. Our group is devoted to progressive thinking, helping others, and exchange of ideas. This fall, we wanted to get involved in politics and experience what it's like to work on a campaign. Lucky for us, we were led to the right person... Vanessa! She was working as Steve Simon's campaign manager, and she eagerly jumped at the chance to get a group of high schoolers involved. I'll always remember the first meeting we had with her because I've never felt so empowered before. We sat down to talk about how the Young Liberals Club could get involved in Representative Simon's campaign. We thought we were just going to be told what to do, but Vanessa immediately exclaimed, "What do you guys want to do? We'll do it!" We talked about the importance of getting young people to understand what the candidates actually stand for, and how we could make that happen. Vanessa had a bottomless list of ways in which we could get involved in her campaign and a contagious energy that made us want to help. The kind of person who can make a bunch of 17-year olds excited about schlepping all over the city hammering ginormous lawn signs into the ground, is the kind of leader we want on our side!

My name is Krista Siems and I am a 2007 graduate of Saint Olaf College. The beginning of my sophomore marked the Kerry-Bush presidential election. I had the role of Campus Coordinator for the DFL Party; it was at this time that I first met Vanessa Blomgren. Vanessa was vital to the success of St. Olaf's Get Out the Vote campaign -- even though she was in her junior year of college, Vanessa always took time out of her busy homework and theater schedule to door knock around campus every night in the two weeks leading up to Election Day. In addition to that, the weekend before the election, Vanessa worked with the DFL Party chairs in the cities of Northfield and Lakeville to coordinate their Get Out the Vote campaign. I remember being thoroughly impressed with Vanessa's ability to reach out and get the attention of those Northfield and Lakeville residents that live in the far outskirts of the city or in farm areas. Though I do not know the exact figures, I know that during the 2004 election cycle, the residents of Lakeville, Northfield, and St. Olaf had extraordinarily high voter turn-out rates. Most significant to me was Vanessa's ability to keep me calm during the turbulent times leading up to and on the day of the election. I got super stressed out during the time leading up to the election and Vanessa was the rock that I needed to keep me calm. I know that my success as a Campus Coordinator can be largely attributed to the meticulousness and support of Vanessa Blomgren.

You may think that it is easy to show dedication to a political party during an election cycle. But Vanessa remained dedicated to the College Dems during the non-election year that followed. As secretary of the College Dems, she would steadfastly take notes, set agendas, work on fundraising, and most importantly, she kept our meetings on task. Vanessa's biggest accomplishment as Secretary of the St. Olaf College Dems was the creation and organization of "Blue Week." Much to my chagrin (as I was co-chair of the Dems at that time), participation had gotten a bit lackluster during this non-election year. Vanessa worked with me to create a week devoted to proudly announcing one's allegiance to the Democratic Party. Together, we organized daily events that made one proud to be a Democrat. Our biggest week event was the beginning of Thursday night viewings of the Daily Show (a tradition that the College Dems have maintained to this day). Having worked with Vanessa when she was Secretary of the College Dems I have full confidence in her ability to be Secretary of the DFL Party. She is a great asset to any organization that she is a part of and the DFL Party will be strengthened with the addition of her as secretary.

Letters of Support from DFL Party Leaders

It is humbling to receive support for anything that you do, especially when you're campaigning for something you're passionate about. Below are two letters of support I've received from active DFL party leaders. I can't thank them enough for their kind words.

_________________

I'm enthusiastically supporting Vanessa Blomgren for DFL Party Secretary. As the SD Chair in the district where she was Secretary (SD44), I have first-hand knowledge of Vanessa’s secretarial abilities. She wrote comprehensive yet succinctly distilled minutes and got them out in a timely manner. I would have been pleased if that was all she did, but she was also an eager contributor to the district in many other ways. Vanessa is a joy to work with because of her positive attitude in all the tasks she assumes.

I urge you to join me in supporting Vanessa Blomgren for DFL Secretary.

Betsy Baker, SD 44 Chair

I'm supporting Vanessa Blomgren for DFL Party Secretary for a number of reasons. First, she is qualified, as her e-mail of 12/28 details. She sought and has held Secretary positions since being first able to get one back in 2003 at St. Olaf and almost continually since then.

Next she is one of a truly excellent crop of intelligent and committed young people we've been fortunate to have active in our party. The perspective young people bring to our party is something we old people simply cannot have. Vanessa's work with MyDFL has put her in touch with the young movers and shakers in our party, with the issues that affect them and with the ideas they have for moving the DFL forward. A qualified young person in an officer position sends the message that the DFL values the talents and opinions of bright young people -not just on the coordinated campaign staff when we need 24/7 work done, but deep within our party's decision making team.

On this SCC list, Vanessa brought up the idea of making the Secretary's position more than it's proscribed duties -that kind of thinking tells me she'd make an excellent party officer. This is truly making the DFL more than the sum of it's parts.

Last, but not least, Vanessa has tremendous and infectious enthusiasm. You simply cannot speak with Vanessa and not feel the commitment and excitement she has for promoting Democratic values. A look at her e-mail of 12/21 confirms not only her passion for Democratic politics but her fearlessness in defending her values; she wrote directly to Target's CEO -her employer- about the ill considered funding of MN Forward!

For these reasons and more, I urge you to support Vanessa Blomgren for DFL Secretary.

George F. Greene, Associate Chair Third Congressional District DFL

Official Candidate Announcement

(This email was originally sent to the DFL State Central Committee on 12/17/2010.)

Fellow DFLers,

I am writing to you all tonight to announce my candidacy for Secretary of the DFL State Party. I believe that I am uniquely qualified to take on this role and that I have a strong vision of how I can help shape our party in the coming years.

I have served the DFL in the following ways:

  • Secretary of St. Olaf College Democrats (Fall 2003 – Spring 2006)
  • Secretary of Senate District 44 DFL (2008-2010)
  • Secretary of Congressional District 5 DFL (June 2009 – Current)
  • Secretary of Minnesota Young DFL (January 2010 – Current)
  • Campaign Manager for Rep. Steve Simon (May 2010 – November 2010)
  • Volunteer on various campaigns in 2004, 2008, 2010

I spoke with Sue Rego earlier this week to understand the position and the ways she went above and beyond. The requirements of this job include recording and archiving the meeting minutes, maintaining SEC rosters, and tracking SEC attendance. Sue took on two other large duties as Secretary, managing the list serve and ensuring DFL activists were remembered when they passed away. I wish to continue and hopefully expand upon the great work that Sue has done for our party.

Since the election in November there has been much discussion about how we can move forward and grow an even stronger party. I believe that a key piece of that puzzle comes from engaging the young Democrats around the state.

I want to be an ambassador to young DFLers. Just as the Chair and Associate Chair will travel around the state to meetings and events, I plan to visit college campuses to inform students of what’s going on at the state level and to listen to their ideas and concerns. I want to be a role model to those interested in getting involved and possibly taking on a leadership role of their own.

To fully engage Democrats today we need to understand the power of technology in moving our party forward. The Internet has made the world a smaller place and we can use it to do the same for our state. The Secretary is charged with communicating the minutes, but I see a potential to have the Secretary lead a communications charge with the Internet including the DFL website, Facebook, Twitter and whatever newer form of online interaction is waiting in the wings.

Of course not everything happens online, the DFL is a community which I am so proud and touched to be apart of. I am in a place in my life where I have the freedom and resources to travel to all corners of this state to meet, discuss and celebrate with other passionate DFLers. In the past few years I have been fortunate enough to travel throughout the state for DFL meetings and conventions and I pledge to attend many more if elected to be your Secretary.

I want the next Secretary to be qualified and passionate, I know I would be great for the job and I hope to earn your support.

My Story, My Plan

(This was originally sent as an email to the DFL State Central Committee on 12/21/10.)

As I run for Secretary of our great party, I hope to speak to as many DFLers as possible. In the meantime, I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little more about myself, my experience and my plan.

My Story

My political life began when I was a kid pounding in lawn signs with my mom. She is a strong liberal woman who raised me to believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. She taught me that there is honor in standing up for what you believe and in standing up for those who cannot always stand up for themselves.

Both of my parents are proud union members, my dad is a retired Letter Carrier and my mom is a member of the Steelworkers Union (USW Local 11-75). She served six years as a steward and was elected to the executive board for three years as the Recording Secretary (it runs in the family). I am well aware that without the security that unions provide, my mom would have lost her job at 3M to out-sourcing or subcontractors before I graduated high school. I will never take that for granted.

Since high school, I have also learned not to take the work that activists do for granted. I was a freshman in college when we all lost Paul Wellstone and in that same year we went to war in Iraq. For the first time I fully realized that it’s not enough to just believe in Democratic values, but we all have the responsibility to act upon those beliefs.

The first chance I got, I ran for and was elected Secretary of the St. Olaf College Democrats and served in that role until I graduated. Throughout the 2004 Presidential Campaign I coordinated trainings for students on ways to get involved and how to caucus. These trainings drew additional membership which we sustained throughout the years. I also organized a fundraising campaign in which we raised over $6,000 in one semester, three times more than during the previous Presidential election. We used a similar plan in the following two years, bringing in more money than ever.

During the ’04 campaign, our St. Olaf group worked closely with the local units and coordinated campaign giving me a strong knowledge of the unique challenges of campaigning in more rural areas. Our state is very geographically diverse and state wide elections cannot be won or lost in just one location. I feel lucky to have lived in, and learned to campaign in a rural area.

After graduating in 2006 with a Theatre major and Management Studies concentration, I moved back to the metro area to look for a job. I was hired by Target Corp in July 2006 to be a Merchandise Specialist. Now I’m a Sr. Project Coordinator on the Owned Brand Foods team (Archer Farms & Market Pantry). My core responsibilities are Project Management (being detail oriented is a must) and leading my team of functional experts and external vendor partners through our roadmap to hit all deadlines.

I know that Target is not in favor with many DFLers (and Democrats around the country) due to the donations it made to MN Forward. Like many of you, I sent an email to our Government Affairs team and our CEO to express my disappointment (a copy of that email is attached). It gives me so much hope and joy to know that so many of you sent similar emails and through our work together we defeated not only Tom Emmer, but the moneyed corporations that backed him. I pledge to you that I will continue to be a strong voice from inside the company if you will continue to fight from outside.

Community involvement is a very important aspect of my life. I am on the Target Volunteer Council in charge of two of our headquarters wide events in the coming year, after leading two subcommittees in 2010. I have volunteered my time at a Nursing Home in White Bear Lake, a Humane Society in Faribault, and a high school theatre group in Little Falls (among others). I served as Secretary for DFL groups in college, my Senate District, my Congressional District and statewide for MYDFL. I have door knocked, phone banked, attended meetings or conventions in all eight Congressional Districts. As Secretary of MYDFL I helped draft a state wide Youth Coordinated Campaign Plan and assisted with planning and hosting three major events throughout the last year.

This past year I decided to focus my remaining spare time on managing Rep. Steve Simon’s reelection campaign. We ran a vigorous campaign in a year when DFL votes and volunteers were tough to come by. I had a unique experience in partnering with the other local campaigns and the Coordinated Campaign in SD44. Instead of duplicating efforts and vying for the same volunteers, I, along with Cheryl Youakim (Sen. Ron Latz) and Paul Cumings (Rep. Ryan Winkler) worked with the Coordinated Campaign to recruit volunteers, hit all of our targets and streamline data entry. On November 3rd Steve reelected, receiving more votes than any single Democrat in SD44.

My Plan

There were many heartbreaking losses around our state this year, some of them right next door, in campaigns I volunteered for. We need to remember this past year, learn from each other’s wins and losses and work together even harder in 2012.

Governor-Elect Dayton deserves a State House and Senate that will work with him. We deserve a government that will get stuff done for the unemployed, the sick, the poor, for those who are struggling and for those of us trying to build a life for our families. To do this we need to be strong in Greater Minnesota, we need to be strong in the cities, and we need to be strong in the ever expanding suburbs. I have campaigned, volunteered and served as secretary in all three areas.

This is a big state and unlike the Republican’s, we’ve built a big, welcoming, party. We must use the technology available to us to make our state smaller, while not forgetting that Democrats are strongest when we reach out and speak to each other and voters face-to-face. I have the time and resources to travel to all corners of this state to meet, discuss, and celebrate with other passionate DFLers.

As Secretary, I will work to be an ambassador for young people wanting to get involved by visiting colleges and universities. I will use my extensive secretary experience to perform the job to the very best of my abilities. As Secretary of the State DFL, I will dedicate my time to traveling around the state to inform, as well as to listen to input and feedback from all of you. I will use the role as secretary to find new ways to communicate with voters, focusing on technology and ways to use the internet for messaging and outreach.

I love our party, I love the passion that comes out when we know it’s just us DFLers listening. Long ago I decided I would dedicate my free time to fighting for the candidates we’ve endorsed, the platform we’ve adopted and the values we know will move our state in the right direction. Now I ask you for your support and your vote on February 5th.
